Exploring Teacher Recruitment and Retention: contextual challenges from international perspectives
Date: 2020
Author/s: Ovenden-Hope, T. and Passy, R
Keywords: contexts; international comparison; policy-making; inequalities

Summary:

This is an edited volume that examines the persistence of challenges for teacher retention and recruitment across contexts and the unequal impacts on the most disadvantaged communities. The book is in two parts with Part 1 exploring the challenges in the English context and the unequal impacts of teacher shortages within a marketised national school system. Part 2 presents global perspectives and focuses on shared concerns whilst emphasising that teacher attrition is experienced differently around the world. Consistent messages emerge from both parts of the book. Financial incentives to maintain teacher supply have only a limited impact. More enduring improvements are based on access to high quality CPD, positive relationships between teachers and leaders, increased trust in teachers and genuine collaboration and consultation about policy between policy makers, school leaders and the profession.
