Summary:

The report explores the multiple factors that impact on teachers’ decisions to leave the profession. There is a specific focus on teachers’ pay but the report also identifies the range of issues that need to inform policy to address the problem. At the time of reporting, 1 in 5 new teachers left the profession within their first two years of teaching, and almost 1 in 3 within their first five years. The report calls for improved support for new teachers via an enhanced probationary/induction period and professional learning provision.
