School workforce in England (2026 release)
Date: June 2026
Author/s: Department for Education
Keywords: workforce retention; recently qualified teachers; mid-career teachers

Summary:

This recent report is the 2026 publication of the school workforce statistics for England, reporting on the 2025 figures. The reports are published annually. The statistics on retention on recently qualified teachers indicate the persistent challenge of retaining new entrants to the profession. Just over 10% of teachers who qualified in 2024 had left the state sector in 2025, with nearly 20% of teachers leaving after two years (the end of statutory induction). Three quarters (75.8%) of teachers who qualified three years prior were still teaching in 2025. The challenge to retain teachers into mid-career is also a concern. Only two thirds (67.4%) of teachers who qualified five years prior were still teaching in 2025. For teachers who qualified ten years previously, almost 6 in 10 teachers (57.7%) were still teaching.
