Date: 2020
Author/s: Sibita, L
Keywords: Teacher pay; shortage subjects; qualifications; maths; physics

Summary:

This EPI report analysed the relationship between teacher pay and recruitment/retention problems, particularly in shortage subjects such as maths, sciences and languages. The report documents that, in 2020, only 54% of teachers in shortage subjects had relevant degrees (compared to 68% generally) and identified that retention rates are particularly poor in shortage subjects, with only 50% remaining in teaching five years after training in maths and physics.
